Before you start with search engine marketing you have to do a little research to find the preferred long tail keywords that are being searched for
It’s not good being on the top of Google for something that not a soul is typing in, yes, you run a cattery and you are number 1 for; a holiday home for your cat
Individual keywords are not much use either as people who are thinking of purchasing are using long tail keywords, quite simply, a two, three or four word phrase, and not a single word
These are the keywords that persons use whenever they are searching for a particular goods and services to buy and not simply browsing the web
An example is, type something into Google and you will be shown a drop down list, they are what people are searching for today
Also remember, in a great deal of cases, people are actually searching for a local company or service, such as a plumber for example, so if you were living in Luton in England for example, you wouldn’t look for for just plumber as this will show too many irrelevant results, instead you'd probably type in plumber in Luton
The following is a neat little trick if you are developing your own internet site, or you may show this to your web designer, go to Google, do a search, then scroll down to the left and notice the wonder wheel, this gives some great ideas on relevant search terms you can use for your other webpages
On your home page, try and get the most important keywords in the title and on the web page, you can go for up to 3 in some cases, and of course, you can then build your internal pages to display these keywords
So your home page title could be for example, North London Cattery
Keep in mind, the above keywords will have their very own optimised pages but it is best to have them on your home page
Just have a paragraph about each on these 3 keywords on your home page with the key phrase within each appropriate paragraph and linked directly to its relevant page, this works well with all the search engines, links within the actual text
As pointed out before, try to find the right keywords and phrases to utilize, just give it some thought just before building your web pages
Depending on your product or service, try to use a three word keyword phrase or even four, this will narrow down the people who find you, but when they do they are looking to buy from you so keep this in mind
As soon as you have identified the correct keywords, built your web pages and optimised them, you need to look at what to do next
A very good step forward will be to write something of interest about what you do, the product or service you offer, after all, you are the expert
A good article will be around 550 words and after you are done and spell checked it, sign up to a few article directories, such as Ezine articles or Article alley, this will let you to publish your work and get a good quality link back to your site
